Preliminary Elections Results

Hey, we don’t have the official email from Diana yet, but the election results are trickling in.

First off – Neda Eid has been elected as Justice to the Union Judiciary. So has Judah A. Marans, Matthew Kriegman, and Justin Pierre-Louis

Asa Bhuiyan and Rami R. Abdelghafar are the new Senators at Large, Nipun Marwaha and Mark A. Zager are the new Senators for 2012. Michael J. Weil has been elected to Senator for 2010.

Jenna Rubin and Jourdan Cohen are battling it out to be the 2nd Senator for Class of 2011. That other guy won the 1st spot. I forgot his name. Can you remind me? Michael Newborn won the Senatorship (of 2011) in the first round.

Since you all will win, and the results won’t change, we will not have a final round. It doesn’t really make sense to.

  1. The key in this case is the wording of the rule. It clearly uses the term “votes cast” so if a write-in got less than 10% of the votes cast it would not be enough to make the final ballot. The two different phrases are used because one talks about a single seat election where you can only vote for one candidate. In that, the number of votes should equal the number of ballots. Votes are used in a multi-seat election because the number of votes won’t equal the total number of ballots, and people often vote for less than the number permitted.

Since the election rules are law of the land in this case, it appears that one UJ seat will remain vacant till fall elections.

  2. All races last year were counted by 10% of the total voters, not votes, including the Senator-at-Large. I think the disparity is yet another thing for the Constitutional review to take a look at next year.

  3. What an embarrassing release of the vote tallies- they included votes that by the rules are to be null and void since they aren’t for candidates. Anyway, the 10% claim is unclear. Lovers of democracy would probably want it to mean 10% of all the people who voted, but the elections rules use 2 different phrases about counting votes.

“if any one candidate gets a simple majority of all ballots, including abstentions, that candidate will be granted a mandate, and there will not be a final round.” here, one “ballot” clearly means the choices of one voter, not one of five choices by that voter.

“To be added to the final round ballot a write in requires at least 10% of the total number of votes cast in the primary round for that race, excluding abstentions…” here they use “votes cast”… the choice to use different wording pushes me towards the rather unworkable (in multi-seat races) interpretation of 10% of each choice of each voter.

Anyone remember how it was counted in the Senator at Large race last year?

  4. no, Carrie, usually five justices win and then the justices choose a chief justice amongst themselves. there were three candidates on the ballot and one successful write-in meaning there is one vacancy that will be filled next fall.

  5. Wait, I thought there were only 4 justices picked and then elections for Chief Justice.

    I’m new, so please clarify.

  6. Leeyat Slyper should be the fifth Justice. She had more votes than any other candidate, and she beat abstain.

  7. Nipun Marwaha and Mark A. Zager are the new Senators for 2012, not 2011.

Thanks for getting this up, though.
